What's New 6.3.1665 - 12th December 2016

  • Windows PE 10 Build 1607
    Windows PE 10 has been updated for build 1607 and includes BitLocker XTS support. To update an existing installation, click through to the final rescue media Wizard page and click 'Rebuild'. If your system contains any partition encrypted using BitLocker XTS then the appropriate PE components will be automatically downloaded and PE 10 updated to 1607.
  • Windows PE network adaptors IP address configuration
    When performing an automatic restore using the Macrium recovery boot menu, any existing static IPv4 configurations are now copied to the same Network adaptors in Windows PE.

Bug Fixes

  • Sever Plus Exchange 2016 Mailbox restore target incorrect
    Granular restore for Exchange 2016 would restore to the Exchange logged-on user rather than the original user for the mailbox items. This has been resolved.
  • VBScript and PowerShell scheduled task 'Conflict' logic not working correctly
    Scheduled backups using script files could incorrectly be flagged as causing a 'conflict' and not run when tasks executions were programmatically determined in the source code. This has been resolved.

    A program error could occur when copying several hundred driver files into rescue media ISO file. This has been resolved.

  • Windows 10 UEFI DVD/CD UEFI boot problems
    Windows 10 DVD/CD rescue media was only able to boot legacy MBR after installing release v6.2.1495. This has been resolved.

    This release contains changes to the Macrium Reflect process execution and Service to overcome scheduling problems with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

  • Windows 10 systray backup notifications
    The number of Windows Tray Notifications shown when a scheduled backup starts has been reduced.
  • Improved application exit performance
    Reflect could occasionally 'hang' for many seconds before shutting down. The exit and cleanup functionality has been improved.

  • Windows PE Image mounting failure
    When UEFI booting Windows PE rescue media, mounted images could fail to open in PE Explorer. This has been resolved.

  • Automatic deletion of Macrium created network share connections
    Authenticated Network connections created by Macrium Reflect at the start of a backup can now be automatically terminated on application exit rather than waiting for the default Windows timeout. This functionality was requested by forum members to help protect against ransomware. To enable, set the following registry entry:

Bug Fixes

  • $PROMPT$ - Prompt for password
    When using $PROMPT$ to prompt for a backup password during execution, this was causing Incremental and Differential backups to fail to start. This has been resolved.
  • Focus stealing when running a scheduled task
    Scheduled tasks running in the background could momentarily steal the Windows focus at the start of execution. This has been resolved.
  • Program exception on exit
    Reflect could occasionally crash on exit if application termination was delayed. This has been resolved.

  • Server Plus - SQL Instance Connection
    Server Plus SQL 'Connect to instance' was not correctly catering for the German locale. This has been resolved.
  • Server Plus - SQL Differential Backups
    SQL Differential Backups, 32 bit only, would occasionally fail MD5 generation for encrypted backups. This has been resolved.
  • Cloning issue converting Primary to Logical
    Converting Primary to Logical drives could incorrectly resize the cloned target logical drive. This has been resolved.
  • Rescue Media Drivers
    A rare issue was reported with Broadcom Network drivers not being handled correctly. This has been resolved.
  • Delete File Dialog
    The Delete File dialog was displaying backup file dates incorrectly. This has been resolved.
  • DiskRestore Utility
    The DiskRestore utility in Windows PE will now correctly handle delta incremental backups

  • Encrypted image file access
    In rare circumstances encrypted images could fail to open with v6.1.1196. This has been resolved
  • Out of memory error not reported for consolidation failure
    On 32 bit Windows installations an 'Out of Memory' error would report 'Unknown Error'. This has been resolved
  • Server Plus - Email export problem
    If an email had no subject, Reflect was previously unable to export it to EML or MSG file. This has been resolved.
  • Server Plus - Deleted email restore problem
    On Exchange 2003 and 2007, if an email's content had been deleted from the Exchange server but it still had an allocated row in the Exchange database, then that row would still be visible in the Mailbox Restore wizard. When restoring folders, Mailbox Restore would try to restore these non-existent emails. This has been resolved

    Failed file reads during consolidation would produce an incorrect error message. This has been resolved.
  • Windows PE Share Mapping
    Mapping a share to a drive letter in Windows PE with a trailing backslash in the share path would cause the mapping to fail. This has been resolved.

    Building rescue media would occasionally not allow drivers to be updated. This has been resolved.

  • Script scheduling improvements
    Concurrent Script scheduling now works in a similar manner to XML file schedules. Scheduling multiple scripts (VBScript or PowerShell) running the same XML file at the same time will now use order of precedence favouring Full over Diff over Inc.

  • Auto decryption of multiple BitLockered drives in PE
    An issue was reported where some BitLockered volumes were not being unlocked in Windows PE. This has been resolved.

  • Rescue Media NVMe Issue
    Attempting to use an NVMe device in PE 10 could cause driver detection issues during rescue media creation. This has been resolved.
  • Problem burning to optical media when multiple optical drives detected
    When burning to optical media, if multiple DVD drives are detected, then the dialog to choose then next destination for spanned discs could prevent selection of the original drive. This has been resolved.

What's New 6.1.909 - 3rd November 2015

  • German language support for Macrium Reflect Free Edition
    For Windows installations using German locales a new option to install Macrium Reflect in the German language is now offered for Macrium Reflect Free Edition. To change the language for existing installations please press the keys Ctrl + Shift + L after updating.
  • Reflect Network authentication settings copied to Windows PE
    Network authentication settings saved in 'Other Tasks' > 'Edit Defaults' > 'Network' are now copied to the Windows PE build. This enables easier access to images saved to authenticated network shares from Windows PE.

Bug Fixes

  • Rescue media driver issue
    The rescue media wizard could incorrectly detect selected 32/64bit PE type. This would then cause selection/auto-location of required drivers for PE to fail. This has been resolved.
  • Image mounting
    The wrong incremental could be opened when mounting delta indexed incremental images. This has been resolved.
  • PowerShell RoboCopy synchronization issue
    RoboCopy synchronization could fail if the source or target path had spaces in the folder name. This has been resolved.
  • Windows PE 10 network share access
    A network share with no authentication could unnecessarily prompt for a user name and password. This has been resolved.

  • Delta Index restore problem
    When restoring an Incremental with 'Delta Index', if there were zero changed blocks since the previous image in the set, then the restore process could fail to restore. This has been resolved.

  • Rescue media driver update
    Selecting a path with a very large number of files to scan for updated drivers could cause Reflect to crash. This has been resolved.
  • Powershell script event logging
    Raising an event from a Macrium powershell script could cause the script to terminate early. This has been resolved.

  • Program error on final page of the Restore wizard
    A rare program crash could occur on the final page of the restore wizard in Windows PE. This has been resolved.

    Error messages for a failed logon attempts were truncated in the logon dialog. This has been resolved.
    Please note that when using Windows PE 10 it may be necessary to prepend the network user name with '.\' to successfully authenticate. i.e '.\username'.

  • Auto verification of Delta Incremental Index Images
    A program error could occur when auto-verifying Delta Incremental Index Images at the end of a backup. This has been resolved.

  • Delta Indexes for Incremental Images
    More efficient Incremental index storage offers faster consolidation and smaller file sizes. This option needs to be enabled in v6.1. See this KB article for more information
    Note: Rescue media must be built using v6.1 if you use delta incremental indexes.
  • German language support
    For Windows installations using German locales a new option to install Macrium Reflect in the German language is now offered in the full installer for Home, Workstation, Server and Server Plus Editions. This will be made available for the free edition soon.
  • Windows PE 10.0
    The latest Windows PE 10 is now included in the rescue media build wizard. PE is now the default option for Windows 8.0 and later. Windows PE 10 offers support for Windows 10 compact installs and Windows 8.1 Wim Boot file systems.
    Note: If your system requires PE 10 then you will be prompted to create PE 10 rescue media when starting the rescue media wizard.
  • Destination drive letter discovery
    The destination drive unique volume GUID path can now be saved in the backup definition file. Saving the backup destination volume GUID path instead of the drive letter enables Windows to assign different drive letters to USB drives without affecting the backup destination detection.
    Note: This option is disabled by default. Please see this KB article for more information.

  • Crash when deleting all Backup Templates
    A program error could occur if all backup templates were deleted. This has been resolved.
  • Dynamic Software Raid issue
    Systems using Dynamic Software RAID volumes could fail to create Differential or Incremental images. This has been resolved.
  • Incorrect taskbar tray message in Windows 10
    "Backup Started" tray message would show in Windows 10 when editing a backup definition. This has been resolved.
  • Rescue media wizard not auto-detecting USB drive insertion
    If a USB stick was inserted while displaying rescue media wizard burn page then it was not always detected by plug-and-play. This has been resolved.
  • File and Folder backup maximum file size issue
    A File and Folder split backup could cause verification failure if the split file size was too small. This has been resolved.
  • Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Restore
    Clean installations of Reflect would sometimes fail to extract the required files for the Mailbox Restore process. This has been resolved.

    The Image Mounting driver has been improved to provide more feedback in the event of issues.
  • WinPE Screen Resolution

    Server Plus SQL database backup files are now more efficient and backup files may be reduced in size.

    Granular mailbox restore had a rare platform issue where support code libraries were not being loaded. This has been resolved.
  • Auto Recovery Boot Menu on v6 Upgrade
    When upgrading from v5 to v6 if an incompatible v5 boot menu is detected it is now removed.
  • Trial License Expiry Issue
    The expiration date for v6 trial installations could be incorrect when installing a trial on top of the v6 Free Edition. This has been resolved.

  • File and Folder 'Add Folder' browse button disappearing
    Certain dialog controls are moved when the Windows Font setting is changed, this caused the 'Browse' button in the 'Add folders' File and Folder backup dialog to be hidden. This has been resolved.
  • Microsoft Exchange retention rules
    MS Exchange backups may not run the retention and consolidation rules specified in the backup definition. This has been resolved.
  • Crash during backup
    A program error could occur if multiple backups are sent to the same target folder from different PC's at the same time. This has been resolved.
  • License dialog error
    When registering Macrium Reflect the license dialog could prevent execution with an error 'The license key has not changed'. This has been resolved.

  • Technicians USB stick improvement
    The Macrium Reflect Technicians USB stick will now ignore bad sector 'CRC' errors by default. A summary of bad sector will be displayed in the Image log.
  • Technicians USB grace period
    A 14 days 'grace' period has been added to the expiration of the Technicians USB stick.
  • Backup set error detection
    For scheduled images, when creating an Incremental or Differential Image, If corruption is detected in the backup set index then a Full image is automatically created.

Bug Fixes:

  • Free space threshold check-box not copied from defaults
    The default selection for free space threshold was not copied to backup definition files when creating a new definition. This has been resolved.
  • Extended partition table sequence
    Restored images of MBR disks where the extended partition table is out of sequence could cause corruption of the restored partition table. This is a very edge case where the partition table was originally initialized outside of Windows. This has been resolved.
  • XML list view hidden
    The list of backup definitions could be hidden if the lower widow is dragged to the top of the container. This has been resolved and restarting reflect restores the original position.
  • Maximum file size setting
    If the Maximum File size setting was changed mid backup set then the value from the Full image was always used. This has been resolved.
  • Crash during consolidation
    A program error could occur if an incomplete backup set was detected in the backup target folder. This has been resolved.

  • "Failed to create empty document" message at start-up
    A fresh install of v6 over an existing v5 install could cause an error message box to be displayed when starting Reflect until next reboot. This has been resolved.
  • Unnecessary backup file 'Splits' when free space is low
    When starting a backup the maximum backup file size was set to the remaining free space on the backup drive. This is unnecessary if a 'Free Space Threshold' is set in the retention rules and could cause an unnecessary 'split' of the backup file. This has been resolved.
  • Windows PE build failure
    Windows PE rescue media could fail to build if the location of the PE files was on a disconnected drive or if there was insufficient free space. This has been resolved.
  • Default retention rules ordered incorrectly
    In the 'Edit Defaults' 'Retention Rules' property page, the selection for 'Backups', 'Days' and 'Weeks' was not in the correct sequence. This has been resolved.
  • 'Differential' option not available when selecting the 'Other Actions' menu in the 'Restore' tab
    The Differential backup option was missing if the backup was created with 'the 'Synthetic Full' option checked. This has been resolved.

    A bug has come to our attention where a failed backup could be reported as successful. This has been resolved.

  • Prompt for passwords
    You can now enter the password '$PROMPT$' in the backup definition and a password dialog will request the password during backup execution.
  • Desktop shortcut prompt for backup type
    You can now create a desktop shortcut for an xml backup definition that prompts for backup type (Full, Diff or Inc).
  • VBScript improvement
    VBScript now uses 'robocopy' to synchronize backup files when 'Directory Synchronization' is enabled in the VBscript options dialog.

Bug Fixes:

  • Mouse scroll wheel issue
    The mouse scroll wheel would not scroll the backup definition window. This has been resolved.
  • Retention issue when running a Diff or Inc from the 'Restore' tab
    Reflect could incorrectly apply retention rules when a Diff or Inc backup was run directly from the restore tab. This has been resolved.
  • Free disk space problem with DFS shares
    Reflect could incorrectly report the wrong free disk space if a Distributed File System (DFS) share was used as the backup target. This has been resolved.
  • Backup time incorrect if the backup took more than 24 hours
    The time to complete a backup would be incorrectly reported if the time was over 24 hours. This has been resolved.

  • Incremental Consolidation improved memory usage
    Incremental consolidation now uses more efficient memory allocation routines.

Bug Fixes:

  • Microsoft Exchange Backup
    Exchange Backup was not stripping the Active Directory server common name identifier from the VSS path specifier. This has been resolved.
  • XML file name issue
    If an xml file name contained the text '-full', '-diff' or '-inc' then this could cause a scheduled task to run the wrong backup type. This has been resolved.
  • Browse image problem in PE 5.0 x64
    A driver signing problem prevented images and file and folder backups from being mounted and browsed in PE 5.0 x64. This has been resolved.

    An NTFS file system could be corrupted by extending the partition size on restore.

    An issue was reported where restoration of mail items may not honor the Daylight Savings Time for restored items. This has been resolved.
  • File system issue after repeated Rapid Delta Restores
    Orphaned NTFS Master File Table records could cause an incomplete restore. This could happen when restoring forwards and then backwards in time on the same file system using RDR.
    Please re-create your rescue media to apply this fix in Windows PE.

  • Backup destination with > 4TB free space reporting issue
    Backup destinations with more than 4TB of free space were being misreported as 4TB in the backup log. This has been resolved.
  • Dynamic Disk Imaging Issue
    Imaging of Dynamic Disk Volumes would fail has not been assigned. This has been resolved.
  • DiskRestore Issues
    The embedded DiskRestore application in Macrium Reflect was not in line with the current Macrium Reflect theme. This has been resolved.

    30 day trial versions of Macrium Reflect can now add the Macrium Reflect recovery option to the Windows boot menu.

    Differential retention by date could delete too many differential backups. This has been resolved.
  • Windows PE trial could expire
    For trial users, the Windows PE rescue media could expire. This has been resolved.
  • File and Folder backup details incorrect
    If the folder selection criteria was changed mid backup set then the Windows Explorer shell extension would show the selection criteria from the full backup. This has been resolved.

  • PowerShell integration check

  • 'Parameter Incorrect' error when creating scheduled tasks from a Template
    This has been resolved.
  • Date edit too long for some international settings
    The Scheduled Tasks date edit field was too short for certain languages. This caused the date to be unreadable. This has been resolved by using the numeric date.

    When cloning using the Windows PE rescue media, Reflect would incorrectly prompt to save an XML definition file. this has been resolved.
  • Technicians portable USB stick issue
    The Technicians portable version of Macrium Reflect would build a 'Trial' version of the rescue media. This has been resolved.
  • v5 upgrade of XML definition
    A v5 XML definition would incorrectly use the global v6 retention defaults if DSM was disabled in v5. This has been resolved.
